Cavenagh Bridge

Cavenagh Bridge

This bridge with its elegant suspension struts is the third to be built and is the only suspension bridge in Singapore. Named after Major General Orfeur Cavenagh (Governor of the Straits Settlement, 1859-1867), it was constructed in 1869 to allay the inconvenience of crossing the Singapore River by boat.

Singapore Art Museum

Singapore Art Museum

Occupying a Roman classical building that was once the St Joseph's Institution, the museum features modern and contemporary paintings, sculptures and installations from South-east Asia. With 13 state-of-the-art galleries, it boasts a 4,000-strong permanent collection of artwork by established as well as pioneering artists. Visitors can also access digitised images of works from public institutions and private collections all over the region. Free guided tours in English and Japanese are available at designated times.

China Town

China Town

Singapore's Chinatown evolved around 1821 when the first Chinese junk arrived from Xiamen, Fujian province in China. The passengers, all men, set up home around the south of the Singapore River which is known today as Telok Ayer. Chinatown’s local name - Niu Che Shui (Bullock Cart Water) arose from the fact each household at that time had to collect fresh water from the wells in Ann Siang Hill and Spring Street, using bullock-drawn carts.

Merlion Park

Merlion Park

The Merlion was first designed as an emblem for the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) in 1964 – the lion head with a fish body resting on a crest of waves quickly became Singapore’s icon to the rest of the world. Originally located at the Merlion Park by the Esplanade Bridge, the Merlion and the Cub became a popular tourist attraction for visitors. The installation ceremony took place on 15 September 1972, officiated by the then Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

East Coast Park

Singapore Botanic Gardens

Singapore Botanic Gardens

The Singapore Botanic Gardens epitomises the tropical island's luxuriant parks. Spread over 52 hectares and close to the centre of the city, the Gardens showcases many outstanding plant collections. Some highlights include the National Orchid Garden, the Ginger Garden, and the Evolution Garden. The numerous plant species here, including many rare specimens, reflect the Singapore Botanic Gardens' richness and diversity of plant life.

Getting There:
Bus services coming to the Gardens are: SBS No. 7, 105, 123, 174 and TIBS No. 75, 77 and 106 along Holland Road; and SBS No. 66, 151, 153, 154, 156, 170, 186 and TIBS No. 67, 171 along Bukit Timah Road.
Civilian War Memorial

Civilian War Memorial

This memorial was erected to remember the shared experiences and struggles of the major races of Singapore during World War II. Every year on 15 February, a memorial service is held here to remember the victims of the war. Located in the east of the Padang the Civilian War Memorial is dedicated to all those who perished during the Japanese Occupation of Singapore between 15 February 1942 to 12 September 1945. Four identical vertical pillars rise to a pinnacle of 92.5 metres, symbolising the shared experiences of the four major races of Singapore - Chinese, Malay, Indian and other races. The remains of the unidentified war victims are buried beneath the monument.
